Meeting Minutes - 06/25/2023 - Operational Farm Tour

June 2023 Update (no business meeting)

On Sunday June 25, the Wild Wescotts enjoyed a tour of an operational Dairy Farm in Cannon Falls. Jeff Schafer's farm was an impressive operation! Thank you to all the folks that made it out to the farm tour! We had 20 people and more than 200 livestock in attendance. Here are a couple notes that I had taken.

Jeff and family have been operating Elmegca Dairy Farm for 150 years. They were gracious hosts, sharing the inner-workings of the robotic milking operations, the automated cattle barn, and more! They provided a tour of the entire facility, sharing everything throughout the lifecycle of the cattle, and the entire operation. For those that were unable to attend, you can get a little preview of their operation from this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRXJ_uCDpPw

Milk from the farm is the only product that is never touched by human hands, and by observing their facilities, we can definitely appreciate the efficiencies. Milk from their farm is processed in the Kemps facility in Minneapolis, where somewhere between 82-92% of raw milk is used in cheese production. Interestingly, Jeff said that people with lactose intolerance are sometimes able to consume A2 milk that comes from a creamy or dairy processing facility without their normal symptoms. Jeff and family are active 4-Hers in Douglas, and in the past they have leased cattle to other 4-Hers to show at the county fair. Furthermore, their farm offers direct sale of duck eggs, chicken eggs, and beef at their site. If you are interested in contacting Jeff directly to purchase products or talk about potential cow-lease, he can be reached via email at foxryder17@hotmail.com, or text 651-210-4623. I did tell him that I was sharing his contact information.
